1 Dead in Hollywood Pedestrian Accident near N Gower Street and Santa Monica Boulevard

HOLLYWOOD, CA (April 30, 2024) – Monday afternoon, a devastating pedestrian accident near N Gower Street and Santa Monica Boulevard killed 1 person.

The crash occurred at about 3:50 p.m. near the intersection of N Gower Street and Santa Monica Boulevard.

Meanwhile, paramedics responded and pulled the victim from underneath the police cruiser and then wheeled him to the ambulance. He later succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) reported that a cruiser with two officers was traveling north on Gower Street when it was struck on the side by a car traveling west on Santa Monica Boulevard.

Kelly Muniz, commanding officer with the LAPD, stated, “That caused the police vehicle to spin and strike a pedestrian who was in this north crosswalk.”

Witnesses at the scene observed the man pinned under the police cruiser, with shoes and guitar pieces visible on the roadway.

Paul Stiegelmar shared that his aunt and uncle were using a rideshare service to commute to work when the collision occurred. Fortunately, they, along with the other individuals involved in the accident, did not sustain serious injuries.

Santa Monica and Gower were closed for several hours as investigators worked to determine the cause of the crash. Muniz mentioned, “They will be conducting a whole schematic and go through the whole light sequencing… They will look at cameras nearby, they will look at the traffic cameras, and we also have digital in-car video.”

Although the airbags in the LAPD cruiser were deployed, the two officers inside escaped the crash without injuries. Muniz emphasized, “Two officers were in the vehicle and they did not sustain any injuries. However, anytime we injure a citizen, it’s always traumatic.”

At this time, the circumstances that led to the crash remained unclear. Once additional details become available, the public will be notified.
