22-Year-Old Man Fatally Struck by BART Train near East 8th Street
OAKLAND, CA (June 18, 2018) – A man was killed late Monday morning after he was struck by a six-car BART train, near East 10th Street. The coroner’s office identified the victim as 22-year-old Detron Nelson. His place of residence was not immediately released.
The collision took place at about 11:35 AM near the intersection of East 10th Street and East 8th Street. Nelson was struck by a BART train heading northbound on the Fremont-Warm Springs line. The events leading up to the collision are currently unknown.
The 22-year-old suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead after he was extricated by firefighters from underneath the train. Community buses were provided by the AC Transit to help affected BART passengers reach their various destinations.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the main cause of the collision. Witnesses and individuals with relevant information regarding this incident are encouraged to contact the authorities as soon as possible. No additional information has been released to the public at this time.
