Family members identified the deceased as 33-year-old Desiree Taitano, of Riverside.
Taitano and a friend traveled in separate vehicles around 2 a.m. on the eastbound 91 near Green River Road, the friend told California Highway Patrol officials.
Desiree followed her friend who was in possession of her dogs. However, the dogs started acting up in the front car, so they both stopped on the side of the freeway.

According to the victim’s wife, Anja Taitano, Desiree loved to rescue stray animals and help any person in need.
