Family of Four, Friend Dead in Delano Crash on Highway 99
DELANO, CA (February 16, 2019) – Five people were killed after their car crashed into a tree late Saturday afternoon in Delano.
The fatal crash happened around 5:05 p.m. on Highway 99 near Highway 155.
According to reports, an SUV was traveling northbound on Highway 99 when the driver began to drive off the roadway for an unknown reason. The SUV then crashed into a tree and caught fire, killing all five people inside.
The victims were a family of four, Jalson and Arlene Laguta, their sons 4-year-old Caleb and 7-month-old Joseph, and a family friend who remains unidentified.
The loved ones of Laguta’s family say they were Jehovah’s Witnesses returning home to Delano from church when the accident occurred.
The northbound side of the freeway remained partially closed near Highway 155 as of 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
It was not immediately known if drugs or alcohol were factors in the accident. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
