Santa Barbara Plane Accident on SoCal Coast
SANTA BARBARA, CA (September 30, 2020) – Sunday morning, authorities discovered a debris field following a Santa Barbara plane crash.
The markings found matched the type of plane that went missing on the Southern California coast on Sunday. As of this time, the authorities haven’t disclosed the condition of the pilot.
Emma Duncan, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson confirmed that a single-engine Cessna 182 Skylane crashed near Santa Barbara about 7:55 a.m.
Meanwhile, Mike Eliason, a public information officer for Santa Barbara County Fire, revealed that a witness reported the incident. Moreover, the witness reportedly saw the plane falling rapidly after taking off from Santa Barbara Airport.
Officials with Santa Barbara County Fire, the U.S. Coast Guard, and Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol responded to the scene near Goleta Beach with boats and helicopters.
After several hours, they found a debris field about 2 miles (3 kilometers) off Isla Vista in waters around 200 feet deep. Also, Eliason confirmed that they dispatched a Los Angeles County special dive team.
According to the FAA, preliminary information revealed that the plan was occupied by only one person. However, Eliason added that several reports weren’t matching. Furthermore, authorities are trying to confirm whether there were one or two people inside the plane.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will handle the crash investigation.
