Debbie Alvarez Dead, 4 Injured After Crash on 51st Avenue in Phoenix

Phoenix, AZ (March 7, 2024) – On Wednesday night, 38-year-old Debbie Alvarez died, and four other people sustained injuries in a crash on 51st Avenue.

Phoenix police officers responded to the crash with injuries involving two vehicles at the overpass in the area around 9:45 p.m. 

Upon arrival, they found four injured people. Dre Lewis, a 22-year-old driver, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received hospital treatment. 

The second vehicle’s driver, a man, along with two passengers, also received hospital treatment for various injuries. 

Debbie Alvarez, a 38-year-old woman, succumbed to her injuries, and a boy remains hospitalized. 

A preliminary investigation revealed that Lewis, driving northbound on 51st Avenue, ran a red light and crashed into the other vehicle, causing the child to be ejected from the vehicle. 

After being released from the hospital, police booked Lewis into jail on several charges, including manslaughter and extreme DUI. 

Phoenix PD officials continue their investigation into the incident.
