Speeding Car Crashes on 5 Freeway in Tustin Killing the Driver
TUSTIN, CA (June 2, 2019) – A man identified as David Grubbs, was killed following a high-speed crash on 5 Freeway early Sunday morning.
The crash happened around 1:42 a.m., at the intersection of northbound 5 Freeway and southbound 55 Freeway. First responders arrived to the area shortly after.
CHP officers began pursuing a speeding vehicle when the driver failed to stop. However, they ended the pursuit once it became too dangerous. Witnesses say the car was going in excess of 100 mph at the time.
Furthermore, the vehicle veered across the connector embankment before striking a tree and landing on its roof. The driver was ejected from the vehicle, which caught fire as a result of the impact.
Moreover, the fire also began spreading to the hillside but was eventually extinguished.
The driver, the sole occupant of the car, was pronounced dead on scene due to the impact. He was later identified as David Grubbs, 26, of Tustin.
A SigAlert was issued at 1:59 a.m., closing the connector until around noon Sunday.
The crash still currently remains under investigation at this time.
