Grady James Hocking Arrested after DUI Collision on Ward Memorial Boulevard
GOLETA, CA (June 8, 2018) – Two people were hospitalized early Friday morning after a wrong-way driver caused a head-on collision on Highway 217.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place at approximately 1:30 AM. A 2018 Mazda, driven by 21-year-old Grady James Hocking of Goleta, was heading southbound on Highway 101 before entering the eastbound 217 Highway in the wrong direction. A short while later, the Mazda collided head-on with an oncoming 2012 Dodge driven by 53-year-old David Cruz.
The impact of the collision caused injury to both drivers: Cruz suffered a broken right leg, while Hocking sustained a fractured sternum. There is no update on their current medical conditions.
Evidence suggests that Hocking was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Authorities plan on arresting Hocking after he recovers from the injuries he sustained. It was also noted that both drivers were secured in a seatbelt, which is believed to have saved their lives.
