Driver Fleeing Police Dies in Crash after Car Goes Airborne over San Joaquin River
FRESNO, CA (January 20, 2020) – A driver was killed after his vehicle became airborne over the San Joaquin River following a police pursuit Monday morning.
The chase began when officers tried to pull over a reckless driver around 8:30 a.m., near Herndon and Parkway Avenue.
The pursuit was later called off after speeds increased above 100 mph. The driver of the Mercedes eventually jumped the river near Dickenson and Herndon Avenues, clearing the water and landing on the Madera County side, according to investigators.
Police say that the driver, identified as 58-year-old David Callahan of Fresno, was killed in the crash.
No additional details were immediately provided.
The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.
