60-Year-Old Motorcyclist Hospitalized after Suspected DUI Collision near Highway 299, Alexander Sarver Arrested
ARCATA, CA (September 23, 2018) – A motorcyclist was injured Sunday afternoon following a suspected DUI crash near Highway 299. The victim was later identified as 60-year-old David Berrey of Eureka.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place shortly after noon near the junction of Highway 101 and Highway 299. A white Subaru Forester, driven by 24-year-old Alexander Sarver of McKinleyville, failed to negotiate the right turn and left the roadway.
The Subaru then slammed into a right-turn arrow marker and a utility box, before colliding with a dark gray Toyota Corolla. Sarver did not stop and continued to head west, where he crashed into the metal median divider.
A 2008 Harley Davidson, driven by Berrey, attempted to avoid the collision but ended up hitting the right front corner of the Toyota. The motorcyclist sustained major injuries to his shoulder, ankle, and leg. He was later transported to the Mad River Community Hospital for medical treatment. Meanwhile, the driver of the Toyota, identified as Trenton Pruitt, and his female passenger were unharmed in the crash.
Sarver showed obvious signs of intoxication and was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. Additional information will be released following the conclusion of the investigation.
