Two Fatally Injured in Small Plane Collision near Conejos Valley Road
DESCANSO, CA (August 22, 2018) – Two people were killed Wednesday night after a small airplane crashed on Tule Springs Road. The San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victims as 77-year-old David Alan Derby of Santee and 36-year-old Ryan Michael Willis of San Diego.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision was reported near Conejos Valley Road, just east of the El Capitan Reservoir.
The 1682G Champion 7KCAB certified aircraft left from Gillespie Field in El Cajon but did not return that evening. Hours after the plane failed to return, a plane making a steep descent was spotted via radar by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.
A search and rescue team worked and found the two men dead in the wreckage of the small plane. Derby was a commercial pilot for 15 years, according to the Federal Aviation Administration‘s pilot database. The plane was registered to his company, Three Point Partners Inc. No additional information has been released to the public, as officials continue to investigate the cause of the fatal crash.
