Scotts Valley Man Dies after Crashing Car into Tree on Highway 17 at Redwood Estates Road
LOS GATOS, CA (January 31, 2019) – A man was killed when he lost control of his sport utility vehicle and slammed into a tree late Thursday afternoon in Los Gatos, authorities said.
The crash happened around 5:33 p.m. along southbound Highway 17, just South of Redwood Estates Road off-ramp.
According to the CHP, the man was driving his blue Toyota FJ Cruiser on southbound Highway 17 at about 100 mph, when he lost control, veered off the roadway and hit a tree with enough force to split the SUV in half.
The man was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified by the Santa Clara Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office as a 60-year-old Dan Miller of Scotts Valley.
The crash brought traffic to a halt during the height of the Thursday evening commute. Traffic was backed up for about 7 miles just after 7:00 p.m. and motorists were advised to expect delays and to use alternate routes to avoid the area.
It was not known if drugs and/or alcohol have played a role in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
