23-Year-Old Man Hospitalized after Collision with Light-Rail Train on Sproule Avenue
SACRAMENTO, CA (June 7, 2018) – A cyclist was hospitalized Thursday afternoon following a train collision on North 12th Street and Sproule Avenue. His identity was not immediately disclosed.
According to the police, they received reports about the incident at 3:45 PM. They found a 23-year-old man unresponsive, but alive at the scene. The man was rushed to UC Davis Medical Center, where he was listed under critical condition.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the cyclist was riding his bicycle against traffic and failed to stop at the Regional Transit lights warning of an oncoming train. The train operator used the emergency brakes after seeing the cyclist crossing.
No other injuries were reported, including the passengers aboard the train. Buses were used to transport the affected passengers to the next available light-rail station.
Affected areas were kept open but were temporarily closed at 6:20 PM, after an investigative unit took over the case. No other information is available to the public at this time.
Accidents involving trains can be incredibly dangerous, due to the size and weight of locomotives. Do not attempt to go near the tracks, especially if you see a train approaching. Always stay alert when driving, biking, or walking near train tracks.
