Van Driver Dies After Crash on Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano

San Juan Capistrano, CA (June 14, 2024) – On Friday, one person died, and one other sustained injuries in a crash on Ortega Highway.

The crash occurred just west of Gibbey Road along the highway, with officers responding to the scene at 1:48 p.m. 

The initial investigation found that the van was traveling eastbound on the two-lane highway when it drifted into the westbound side and crashed into a Freightliner dump truck, CHP officials said.

The dump truck’s driver suffered minor injuries, while the van’s driver was fatally injured, according to CHP. 

The CHP continues to investigate the crash, noting that the information released so far is from a preliminary investigation. 

It remains unclear what caused the van to drift into the opposite lane. 

No other details have been released.
