Police Investigate 3-Car Crash on Northbound 99 Highway in Visalia

Visalia, CA (October 26, 2023) – On Tuesday at noon, three people sustained injuries in a 3-car crash on Northbound 99 Highway.

According to the CHP, a three-car crash near Visalia was caused by a tire tread separation, which caused the vehicle to lose control and smash into the highway wall.

Around noon Tuesday, officials received a 911 call about an accident on northbound Highway 99, south of Avenue 384, to which medical personnel were called. California Highway Patrol (CHP) Visalia officials said they responded to the accident.

The initial investigation indicated that a 1998 Toyota, a 2021 Lexus, and a 2018 Chevrolet all traveled at approximately 70 mph on northbound Highway 99, south of Avenue 384.

As the vehicles continued north, the tread on the left rear tire of the Toyota came loose. The tire remained inflated and on the rim, but the tread separation caused the Toyota to enter the median, where the front of the Toyota collided with the concrete wall of the median. The driver of the Lexus was unable to react in time to avoid the Toyota safely.

As a result, the Lexus driver applied the vehicle’s brakes and turned to the left, where the front of the Lexus collided with the rear of the Toyota.

CHP officers said it’s unclear if the Toyota overturned before or after the Lexus hit it because of conflicting and contradicting testimony. As a result of these crashes, unknown flying debris from the Toyota or Lexus struck the Chevrolet.

EMS flew the driver of the Toyota to a nearby hospital by helicopter with serious injuries. The Lexus driver and passenger were also sent to a nearby hospital.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash.

Further investigation is ongoing.
