Child Hospitalized After Crash on Monroe Street in Harlingen

Harlingen, TX (April 12, 2024) – On Friday, a 7-year-old child sustained injuries in a crash on Monroe Street.

According to a Facebook post from HCISD, the incident occurred when the Jefferson Elementary student was exiting a school bus at the intersection of Monroe and “D” street Friday afternoon.

Superintendent J. A. Gonzalez and school board trustees were immediately notified and maintained constant contact with school district transportation administrators at the scene, the district reported.

Gonzalez expressed gratitude that the 7-year-old did not sustain any life-threatening injuries, although the student suffered a fractured ankle.

Gonzalez added that the district looks forward to the student’s return to Jefferson Elementary soon.

Harlingen police reported that the child was struck by a passing truck while the school bus was stopped, with loading lights and signs deployed.

Harlingen CISD School Board President Belinda Reininger urged the public to remain vigilant when driving near school buses, especially during loading and unloading.

Reininger emphasized the collective responsibility to ensure the safety of children.

No citations were issued in connection with the incident. An investigation is ongoing.
