Driver Dead and Child Injured after Crash on Interstate 8 in El Cajon

El Cajon, CA (January 29, 2024) – A driver died, and a 17-month-old sustained major injuries in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 8 over the weekend.

The California Highway Patrol reported that around 7:40 p.m., a man driving a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado headed eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-8, west of Second St.

The Chevrolet driver, moving in the No. 1 lane of westbound I-8 at an unknown speed, made an unsafe right turn, causing his vehicle to veer off the road. 

The vehicle crashed into a concrete guardrail wall on the south edge of the roadway.

This collision propelled chunks of concrete debris onto several vehicles traveling on Second St. beneath I-8. The flying debris inflicted major, non-life-threatening injuries on a 17-month-old child seated in one of these vehicles.

 Emergency services transported the child to Rady Children’s Hospital.

Subsequently, the Chevrolet driver’s vehicle collided with a concrete wall on the east sidewalk of Second St. and caught fire, which crews later extinguished. 

The driver did not survive the accident. 

Authorities are now investigating whether driving under the influence was a contributing factor in this crash.
