Deputy Hospitalized after Crash on Interstate 5 in Thurston County

Thurston County, WA (December 28, 2023) – Early Thursday morning, a deputy sustained injuries in a crash on Interstate 5.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office shared on Facebook that the pursuit started after 2 a.m. in the Rochester and Grand Mound area, concluding on Interstate 5 near the Scatter Creek Rest Area.

The county jail roster reveals that deputies placed the man under arrest on charges of second-degree assault, attempting to escape from a pursuing police vehicle, unlawful imprisonment, possession of a stolen vehicle, and driving without a valid license.

According to the social media post, deputies were tracking a stolen Hyundai that had stopped at the intersection of 178th Avenue Southwest and Jordan Street in Rochester. The driver reportedly attempted to leave as deputies positioned themselves at the scene.

A deputy, noticing this, activated his patrol vehicle’s emergency lights. The driver allegedly reversed and collided with the patrol vehicle’s driver-side door.

A silent video on the Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page depicts the incident. The footage shows the deputy activating his emergency lights just as the suspect’s vehicle appears to back up and turn into the patrol vehicle’s driver’s side.

The post mentions that the deputy was in the process of getting back into his vehicle for protection just before the crash. The collision reportedly forced the deputy “the rest of the way” into his patrol vehicle.

Subsequently, deputies pursued the suspect on suspicion of second-degree assault.

The pursuit concluded on I-5, and the driver was arrested near milepost 91, as indicated in the post and jail roster.

The post notes that the deputy involved in the crash received treatment at Providence St. Peter Hospital Emergency Room for minor injuries.
