Woman Dies After Crash on Interstate 15 in Yermo
Yermo, CA (August 1, 2024) – A violent solo-vehicle crash on Interstate 15 early Thursday killed a 24-year-old Las Vegas woman.
The fiery wreck was reported just after 12:40 a.m. on the freeway, just east of Ghost Town Road in the unincorporated community of San Bernardino County, about 8 miles east of Barstow, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The woman was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer south at an unknown speed just before the wreck, stated CHP Officer Shane Hernandez. A 22-year-old Riverside woman was riding as a passenger.
“For reasons still under investigation,” the SUV veered to the right and into the open desert, Hernandez noted. It continued until it struck a metal fence.
“Subsequently, the Chevrolet began overturning within the open desert, in a southwesterly direction, where it ultimately came to rest. After the Chevrolet came to rest, it became engulfed in flames,” Hernandez explained.
The driver was thrown from the vehicle as it rolled, he said. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
The flames were so intense that a good Samaritan who tried to help couldn’t get near the burning SUV, according to CHP logs.
Officials reported that the passenger managed to exit the vehicle and went to a nearby gas station to seek help. She suffered minor injuries and declined to be taken to a hospital, officials added.
Authorities have not released the name of the woman killed in the crash pending family notification by San Bernardino County coroner’s officials. Officers from the CHP’s Barstow area office are handling the investigation.
Witnesses or anyone with information can reach the CHP’s Barstow Office at (760) 255-5900.
