1 Person Hospitalized After Crash on Highway 178 in Bakersfield

Bakersfield, CA (May 17, 2024) – One person sustained injuries in a crash on Highway 178.

An SUV crashed off Highway 178 into the Kern River, closing the highway at the mouth of the canyon, reports CHP’s website. 

The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. on eastbound Highway 178 near the mouth of the canyon.

For reasons unknown, the SUV veered into the water, falling 200 feet into the Kern River. At least one person sustained major injuries from the crash.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 178 are closed in the area. Avoid the area if possible, as heavy traffic is expected.

CHP stated it is unknown when the area will be cleared. At least one person has been transported to Kern Medical for treatment.
