4 Vehicles Involved in Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash on 55 Freeway in Costa Mesa
COSTA MESA, CA (December 4, 2018) – A man was killed following a hit-and-run crash Tuesday night in Costa Mesa, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash happened around 6:10 p.m. on southbound 55 Freeway at Del Mar Avenue off-ramp.
CHP officials said that four vehicles were involved in the collision. A male driver of one of the vehicles was killed in the crash. Several other people were taken by ambulance to a hospital with unspecified injuries.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending next of kin notification.
The total number of the injured victims and the extent of their injuries were not immediately available.
Meanwhile, police affirmed that another male driver fled the scene after the crash.
A bystander playing in the park with his daughter noticed the driver of a Honda Accord parked his car across the street and started acting strangely. Looking at the extensive damage to the car, the bystander then called the police.
CHP officials located the vehicle near the intersection of Vanguard Way and Georgetown Lane, less than half a block from the Costa Mesa Police Department.
They arrested the suspect and booked him on suspicion of felony hit-and-run.
No additional information was provided at this time. Investigation of this fatal incident is still ongoing.
