3 Crashes Reported, Roadways Closed as Heavy Rain Continues in San Fernando Valley
SAN FERNANDO VALLEY, CA (March 07, 2019) – Three collisions were recorded on northbound 101 Freeway in San Fernando Valley Wednesday amid heavy rains.
The first incident is a three-vehicle collision involving a big rig near De Soto Avenue in Woodland Hills as per CalTrans. A second crash involved another big rig that appeared to have caught fire near Parkway Calabasas, west of the first collision, according to the California Highway Patrol. Another crash occurred in the No. 1 lane near Vineland Avenue in the Studio City area.
It was reported that the first big rig hit the center divider and blocked the lanes. Crews several feet back were seen towing a white sedan. Behind the sedan, a pickup truck appeared disabled with damages to its front hood.
The first of the three collisions created a four-mile long traffic backup. The CHP issued a SigAlert for lane numbers 1, 2, and 3 in that area just after 6 a.m. Officials initially announced that the lanes would remain inaccessible to commuters for at least an hour. At 8 a.m., CalTrans advised that the incident would obstruct traffic for an unknown duration.
According to the CHP, the second big rig blocked all lanes near Parkway Calabasas. The lanes did not fully reopen until about 11 a.m. although the flames were extinguished before 5:25 a.m.The CHP also shut down the No. 1 lane near Vineland Avenue.
On Weednesday, the National Weather Service issued flash flood watches across L.A. County, saying showers were expected to continue but will peter out throughout the afternoon.
