Fatal Federal Way Car Crash on 5 Freeway
FEDERAL WAY, WA (August 23, 2019) – A person died while three others sustained injuries in a DUI car crash on 5 Freeway on August 22.
The crash occurred at about 3:00 a.m. on 5 Freeway near the King and Pierce County border. 18-year-old Zoe Phillips of Lakewood lost control of her Chevrolet Cobalt and struck a guardrail. She then stopped in the middle of the highway facing westbound, WSP revealed.
A short while later, 50-year-old Kidane Mengistu‘s truck crashed into Phillips’ car. Mengistu and his passenger sustained injuries. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Cindy Thach, Philipp’s passenger, died at the scene. Another passenger from Philipps’ car, a 26-year-old Lakewood resident, suffered injuries.
Authorities arrested Zoe Phillips for vehicular homicide.
Due to the crash, most lanes on 5 Freeway shut down for several hours and have reopened by 6:45 a.m.
