Merced Fatal Collision Sends Passenger to Hospital

Merced, CA (June 7, 2023) – On Monday, 27-year-old Christina Soltero died while her 27-year-old female passenger sustained injuries following a West Olive Avenue 2-vehicle collision.

The authorities responded at about 7:49 p.m. to the 800 block area and located a white Toyota Camry in the median on its roof and partially on top of a light pole.

Investigating officers believed the Camry was westbound when a tan SUV driven by a 21-year-old man with an adult male passenger, both from Yosemite National Park, turned right out of the parking lot area near the Merced Mall.

Merced Police Sgt. Nathan McKinnon stated that it appears the SUV crossed multiple lanes while turning onto West Olive Avenue resulting in a sideswipe collision.

Apparently, the left side of the SUV collided with the right side of the Camry. As a result, the Camry overturned onto the left side, struck a light pole, and overturned onto its roof in the center median

Moreover, medical personnel in a vehicle driving past the collision stopped and assisted the motorists involved.

Responding officers extricated both occupants of the Camry. The 27-year-old female passenger was airlifted to an area trauma center with critical injuries. The driver, Christina Soltero, was transported to Mercy Medical Center where she was declared dead.

The SUV driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Officers said neither of the SUV’s occupants reported any injuries.

Sgt. McKinnon said that the unsafe turn appears to be a factor in the collision which is still under investigation. Please contact Merced Police Sgt. Nathan McKinnon at 209-388-7753 for more details about this accident.
