2 Injured in Gaviota Car Accident
GAVIOTA, CA (February 22, 2019) – A CHP officer and another driver were injured after the other driver’s vehicle spun out and hit the stopped CHP vehicle on February 21.
The incident occurred on Highway 101 just north of Highway 101 around 7:40 a.m. Due to the collision, traffic was stalled in both directions. The northbound and southbound fast lanes of Highway 101 were shut down for almost two hours during the investigation and cleanup.
According to reports, 40-year-old CHP Officer F. Hernandez of Buellton was traveling north on Highway 101. Soon after, he stopped while his rear emergency lights were activated in the center divider just north of Highway 1. He was waiting for a break in southbound traffic so he could respond to two separate crashes around 2 miles south of that area, CHP Officer Kevin McCool revealed.
Upon Hernandez’s halt, his 2016 Dodge Charger was almost hit by a southbound Ford F-250 pickup. Because of the pickup’s unsafe speed, the driver lost control and spun into the northbound center divider.
The Ford didn’t hit the patrol car and halted on the east side of the northbound lanes without colliding with anything, McCool added.
However, 25-year-old Virginia Yan of San Luis Obispo, who was driving a southbound 2007 Toyota Yaris directly behind the pickup, also at an unsafe speed, also spun out of control and struck the front of Hernandez’s patrol car.
The force of the crash led the patrol car southward in the center median while the Toyota halted while blocking the southbound traffic lanes.
Yan suffered pain in her left knee and Hernandez hurt his hands, back, and legs. It was reported that the two drivers were reportedly wearing their seatbelts during the collision.
The crash is being investigated.
