DUI Crash on 880 Freeway Kills Ofc. Andrew Camilleri Sr. and Injures Ofc. Jonathan Velasquez
HAYWARD, CA (December 24, 2017) – On Christmas Eve, CHP Officers Andrew Camilleri and John Velasquez were on maximum enforcement patrol on the side of Interstate 880 near Southland Mall.
The two were patrolling the highways for hazardous and intoxicated drivers. Velasquez was sitting in the driver’s seat, while Camilleri was in the front passenger seat; both were wearing seat belts.
Driving at high speeds, a red Cadillac swerved and slammed into the back of the CHP utility vehicle, causing extreme damage to both cars. Camilleri, 33, died on site, while Velasques was taken to the hospital for injuries. He was released on Monday, according to Sgt. Rob Nacke, of CHP.
The 22-year-old man from Hayward driving the Cadillac was reported to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol. He was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, and will be charged with serious felony charges when released from medical care. His identity has not yet been released to the public.
Andrew Camilleri Sr. from Tracy had been a CHP officer for one year and four months in Hayward before this fatal accident. He left behind his wife, Rosanna, 12 year old daughter, 6 year son, and 2 year old son.
