Charles Rivette Dies in Vehicle Collision on Interstate 45 [Centerville, TX]

Centerville, TX (February 22, 2024) – Officer Charles Rivette, an 18-year veteran of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, was killed, and two others were injured following a vehicle collision on Interstate 45 Wednesday.

The fatal five-vehicle crash happened at around 10:30 p.m. on February 21, five miles south of Buffalo. It was when the officers transporting an inmate from Oklahoma to Montgomery County

Investigators said deputies were driving southbound on the freeway when they collided with a Freightliner truck. 

Rivette was in the passenger seat during the crash. He was ejected onto the northbound lanes and was hit by a truck. 

Afterward, two 18-wheelers also crashed into the MCSO patrol vehicle.

Officer James Francis, who’s been with MCSO for 14 years, and an inmate identified as a 38-year-old man who had a felony DWI charge, were injured in this traffic accident.They were airlifted to separate hospitals in serious injuries.

Police said Francis was awake and in stable condition while the inmate was still in critical condition as of Thursday morning.

Troopers closed the crash scene for a little less than 24 hours. Officers said there were not any street lights in the area.
