SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, CA (July 25, 2018) – One person was killed and two others were injured in a head-on crash on Highway 46, on Wednesday morning. The deceased victim was later identified as Chan Kee Chung, 58, of Rowland Heights.
According to California Highway Patrol reports, the collision occurred just before 7:45 AM, between a military cargo truck and a sedan.
A 49-year-old Army Reserve sergeant from San Bernardino was driving the cargo truck in a military convoy that was headed eastbound on Highway 46, just west of the Cholame “Y.” At the same time, a Chung was driving a 2000 Acura TL westbound on the highway.
The front left tire of the military vehicle had a sudden failure and the vehicle went across the center line and into the westbound lanes of traffic. The cargo truck and the Acura collided head-on, killing the driver of the Acura.
The driver of the cargo truck and a 24-year-old Army Reserve specialist who was also riding in the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and were taken to the Twin Cities Community Hospital. Their identities were not immediately confirmed. No one was in the back of the cargo truck at the time of the crash. Chung was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers.
Authorities believe that drugs and alcohol were not contributint factors in the fatal collision. The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved loved ones of Chan Kee Chung. Wishing them strength and support during this very difficult time.
