17-Year-Old Boy Fatally Struck by Car on Avenue K near 55th Street West

 
LANCASTER, CA (November 17, 2019) – A 17-year-old boy died after he was hit by a car Sunday evening in Lancaster, authorities said.
 
The fatal incident happened around 6:45 p.m. on Avenue K near 55th Street West.
 
According to police, the teen was walking west in the eastbound lanes of Avenue K, while a 2012 Subaru Impreza was heading eastbound on Avenue K at approximately 55 mph.
 
It appears that the victim bent down while in the roadway to pick up his skateboard. The Subaru driver did not see the pedestrian in the roadway in time to brake effectively and struck the teen.
 
As a result, the pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The coroner’s office later identified him as Carlos Ayala-Guzman of Lancaster.
 
The Subaru driver stopped and rendered aid, along with passersby who stopped for the crash, officials said. The driver voluntarily submitted to field sobriety tests and it was determined he was not impaired.
 
According to sheriff’s news release, the section of roadway was without lighting, and there was no ambient light to help illuminate the roadway. The pedestrian was also wearing a black shirt, making him difficult to be seen.
 
The crash remains under investigation. Authorities encouraged any witnesses to contact traffic investigators at the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station at 661-948-8466.
