36-Year-Old Male Driver Killed in Rollover Auto Accident on Highway 99 in South Sacramento
SOUTH SACRAMENTO, CA (April 30, 2020) – Early Wednesday morning, a carjacking ended with a fatal crash on Highway 99.
Officers first responded around 2:00 a.m., just south of Highway 50. A 36-year-old male driver of a Dodge Durango was carjacked while trying to help a pedestrian.
Authorities say a man requested the driver for a ride. After getting in the vehicle, he became unsettled when the driver said that he was unable bring him to his location.
Then, the male passenger started physically hurting the driver. To avoid an accident, he pulled over on the right shoulder near 47th Avenue.
Both occupants got out off the vehicle as he continued to physically abuse the driver.
Then, the passenger made his way into the driver seat and drove away at a high rate of speed. Meanwhile, the owner of the Dodge was left on the side of the highway.
Half an hour later, the suspect approached stalled traffic due to a scheduled CalTrans construction closure, just north of Simmerhorn Road, in Galt. The suspect then drove across the barrier into the closed number one lane.
As he approached the center median, he eventually struck the steel guardrail. The vehicle was then pushed to the right before rolling over on the right shoulder of the highway.
As a result of the impact, the man was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. At this time, the authorities have not disclosed his identity.
The investigation remains ongoing to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a factor.
No further information has been released at this time. Once available, more details will be given.
