2 Killed in Oakdale Car Accident on Highway 108

OAKDALE, CA (March 29, 2020) – A car accident on March 26 killed two male drivers on Highway 108 and Atlas Road, east of Oakdale.

The California Highway Patrol revealed that one of the victims was a 67-year-old man from Modesto. Meanwhile, the other victim was an 85-year-old man from Newark.

As of this time, their identities remain unreleased due to pending family notification.

The authorities received reports of the crash at 6:54 a.m. on Highway 108 and Atlas Road.

Spokesman Thomas Olsen also revealed that the 67-year-old man from Modesto was driving a red Pontiac GTO east on Highway 108. As he approached Atlas Road, his vehicle veered off the road for reasons still unknown.

As a result, the Modesto driver lost control and his vehicle spun counterclockwise into the westbound lane. His vehicle then went into the path of a westbound Nissan Sentra.

The authorities clarified that both drivers were the sole occupants of their respective vehicles. The drivers were declared dead at the scene.

Moreover, Olsen confirmed that the Pontiac’s driver wore a seat belt at the time of the crash. The Nissan driver, on the other hand, didn’t wear a seat belt.

Reports also revealed that the crash tore the Pontiac into two, and its back end landed in a landscaped area on the north part of Highway 108, a few yards west of Atlas Road.

Olsen also added that even if the Nissan suffered major front-end damage, the damages in the passenger compartment were minimal. The driver could’ve survived if he had wore a seat belt, Olsen stated.

When the Coroner’s Office deputies came to the crash scene, the Nissan’s driver stayed in his car. The crews then cut the seat belt of the Pontiac to free the driver. His body was then taken to an ambulance.

The crash also led authorities to temporarily shut down the highway. The CHP and Oakdale police detoured the traffic. However, Olsen said that at 8:40 a.m., “Caltrans is on the scene directing traffic through the area with minimal delay to motorists.” Before 10:00 a.m., the road reopened.
