Phoenix, AZ (December 14, 2024) – Calbert Tabaha and Albert Tabaha Sr., a father and son died in a crash on Loop 202  after a Tesla struck them while they were refueling their truck on the side of a West Valley freeway.

The crash occurred around 6:35 p.m. Friday on the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway near Elliot Road in Phoenix, AZDPS reported. 

When officers arrived, they found two men who had been hit by the Tesla. 

Phoenix firefighters pronounced both men dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed the victims were father and son.

On Saturday, 12News spoke with Delbert Tabaha, who identified the victims as his brother, Calbert Tabaha, and his father, Albert Tabaha Sr. Delbert, who was present at the time of the crash, recounted the events leading up to the tragedy. 

He explained that they were refueling his vehicle, which had run out of gas, and all three of them were wearing safety vests and using lights to alert drivers.

Delbert described the horrific scene, saying, “I saw that Tesla coming towards us. Before I could yell out, the car went by me, and I fell back.” He detailed the graphic aftermath, adding, “My brother’s body was torn open, and my father looked like he was peacefully asleep but had no pulse.”

Calbert, described by Delbert as the main provider for their family, loved sports, especially the Phoenix Suns. Their father, Albert Sr., married for 53 years, instilled the value of helping others in his children. “He always told us to step in and help when someone is in need,” Delbert shared.

The Tesla’s driver, a woman, remained at the scene and was neither impaired nor injured, AZDPS confirmed.
