The collision happened around 6:31 p.m. on Highway 58 at Brandt Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol, two vehicles collided head-on for unknown reasons. The impact sent one vehicle off the roadway, striking a guardrail. The other vehicle was partially blocking the highway.
Two occupants, one in each vehicle, were reportedly pinned inside their vehicles. Both were airlifted to a hospital for proper treatment. Their conditions and extent of injuries sustained were not immediately available.
The highway was closed in both directions to bring in air ambulances.
Both cars were towed away from the wreckage.
An ongoing investigation continues to determine the ultimate cause of the accident and liability.
The first most basic preventative precaution for head-on collisions is to pay attention. Even if the other drivers on the road are drowsy, distracted, drunk, or whatever the case, you will have more time to react. If you are fully aware of your surroundings, you will be able to see the driver swerving down the road. Also, maintain a safe speed and only drive when you are alert and sober.
