Man and Woman Dead in Buellton Two-Car Crash on Highway 101
BUELLTON, CA (January 31, 2019) – Two people were killed and another one was critically injured following a two-car crash Thursday afternoon in Buellton.
The crash occurred around 12:20 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Highway 101 at the bottom of the Nojoqui Grade.
According to reports, a Honda Element was traveling southbound coming down the grade when it began to hydroplane on water on the roadway. The loss of traction and control caused the Honda to cross over the center divider and into the northbound lanes, where it was broadsided by a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The driver of the Element, a 48-year-old Porterville woman, and a 75-year-old Buellton man who was a passenger in the Cherokee, were killed in the crash. Their names have been withheld pending notification of their family members.
The driver of the Cherokee, a 65-year-old woman from Buellton, was extricated from the vehicle by Santa Barbara County Fire crews. She was later airlifted by Calstar helicopter to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with major injuries. Her name and condition were not immediately available.
A small dog also died in the crash.
Highway 101 was shut down in both directions while the investigation was being conducted. Traffic was flowing again around 1:30 p.m.
