Pedestrian Fatally Injured in Collision near Palomar Street
CHULA VISTA, CA (August 30, 2018) – A man was fatally struck by a vehicle on the northbound 5 Freeway, early Thursday morning. The deceased victim was later identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner as 22-year-old Bryce Alan Bussel.
According to a report from the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened at approximately 3:57 AM, just south of Palomar Street.
Officer Tommy Doerr stated that the victim was walking eastbound across the street when he was struck by a 2013 Nissan Frontier pickup truck. The driver of the truck, a 56-year-old man from San Diego, said that he was unable to avoid the pedestrian and struck him in the far right lane. He remained at the scene and cooperated with officials.
Bussell suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
One lane of Interstate 5 was closed, along with the off-ramp to Palomar Street, as officers conducted their investigation. No additional information has been released to the public at this time.
