43-Year-Old Bicyclist Fatally Injured in Accident on Lander Avenue South of Clausen Road
TURLOCK, CA (February 12, 2018) – A Turlock man was struck and killed by a car while riding a bicycle on Monday night around 8:55 PM, on Lander Avenue just south of Clausen Road.
Bret Jason Gerard, 43, was riding in the southbound lane on Lander, when he was struck by a 2012 Toyota. The car was driven by 42-year-old Peter Youhana of Ceres, and was headed southbound at about 45 miles per hour.
After being struck, the cyclist was hit by multiple other vehicles. Youhana pulled over to the right shoulder of the road and called authorities. He remained at the scene of the crash and cooperated with officials.
Gerard was reportedly wearing dark clothing with no helmet or light equipment, making it hard for him to be seen in the nighttime. He was pronounced dead at the scene from critical injuries sustained. A passenger in the Toyota, 48-year-old Elizabeth Casillas of Los Banos, suffered unknown injuries and was transported to Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock.
The fatal accident is currently under investigation by the California Highway Patrol It is unknown whether or not drugs and alcohol were contributing factors.
