57-Year-Old Crossing Guard Struck and Injured by SUV near Vaquero Drive
SIMI VALLEY, CA (October 12, 2018) – On Friday morning, a crossing guard was hospitalized after a pedestrian crash on Royal Avenue. The victim was later identified by officials as 57-year-old Bob Belanger, a city employee working outside of Madera Elementary School.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place at approximately 7:30 AM, near Vaquero Drive. Witnesses said the victim was in the crosswalk at the time, helping a woman in her 20s to cross the street.
Belanger saw the SUV coming towards them and pushed the woman out of the way, just moments before he was hit. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment of possible life-threatening injuries. There is no update on his current medical condition at this time.
After the crash, the road in front of Madera Elementary School was closed for hours as authorities remained on scene. The driver of the SUV, a man in his 50s, stopped and cooperated with authorities during their investigation. Officials with the Simi Valley Police Department are seeking witnesses with additional information on the incident.
