26-Year-Old Irvine Man Arrested in DUI Garden Grove Car Accident
GARDEN GROVE, CA (June 9, 2019) – A big rig driver was killed following a Garden Grove car accident Sunday morning in Garden Grove.
The crash happened just before 4:00 a.m. on eastbound 22 Freeway at Valley View Street.
CHP officials arrived on the scene and located a USPS semi truck fully engulfed in flames with fuel leaking. Mail packages were strewn all over the freeway.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a Honda veered to the right shoulder and landed on the wrong way. The semi truck then hit the car, slammed into the center divider and overturned.
The unidentified driver of the semi truck suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Honda, a 26-year-old Irvine man, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
A Hazmat team was sent to the site because of the fuel spill from the semi, and both sides of the freeway were shut down for hours. The eastbound side of the freeway opened shortly before noon, while the westbound lanes remained closed.
Investigation of this incident is still ongoing.
During this mournful time, we would like to send our well-wishes and sincere sympathies to the grieving family and friends of the victim.
