83-Year-Old Bicyclist Killed in Oakland Accident
OAKLAND, CA (May 15, 2019) – A bicyclist identified as 83-year-old Youxing Zhang of Oakland was killed following an accident Wednesday afternoon, on Highway 24.
Just after 3:00 p.m., CHP officials responded to eastbound Highway 24, just West of the Martin Luther King Jr. Way off-ramp after receiving reports of a collision between a vehicle and a bicycle.
Arriving officers learned that Zhang was riding his bicycle along the right-hand shoulder when he crossed into traffic lanes.
An eastbound silver Toyota Prius on the second lane of the highway was unable to stop in time. Soon after, it hit Zhang at about 60 mph. Zhang was pronounced dead at the scene.
At least one eastbound lane was closed for the investigation.
Authorities are still working on the incident and urging witnesses to come forward with information.
