Two-Vehicle Collision on Interstate 580 Near MacArthur Boulevard Kills Bicyclist
Oakland, CA (July 31, 2021) – A collision on Interstate 580 involving two vehicles left a bicyclist dead late Friday night.
The tragic incident occurred on July 30 on Interstate 580 just west of MacArthur Boulevard at around 10 p.m.
California Highway Patrol responded to the scene after receiving reports of a collision. When they arrived, they saw a man lying down on the road.
According to an initial investigation, the man was riding a bicycle traveling westbound in eastbound lanes when a vehicle hit him. Officers described the man as driving in complete darkness and wearing dark clothing.
Another vehicle then hit him.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Office will release the bicyclist’s identification once the next-of-kin was notified.
Due to the preliminary duties and investigation, the eastbound I-580 remained closed until 11:40 p.m.
Furthermore, officers said it is unclear whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the fatal crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
