Bicyclist Dies after Collision with Big Rig on Highway 101 near Todd Road
SANTA ROSA, CA (November 5, 2019) – A bicyclist lost his life in a collision with a big rig on Highway 101, Tuesday afternoon.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at about 12:10 PM. A Peterbilt flatbed truck and the bicyclist were stopped at a red light facing east toward the freeway. After the light turned green, the big rig driver looked to the bicyclist, who did not move and appeared to be heading right.
Then, the big rig proceeded to go straight at a slow speed. However, the driver immediately stopped when he felt something hit the trailer.
Emergency responders rendered aid to the struck bicyclist after he got stuck between the wheels of the big rig truck. Unfortunately, he died at the scene. Authorities withheld the identity of the victim, pending notification of next of kin.
The big rig driver, later identified as 21-year-old Octavio Carmona, remained and cooperated with investigators. As per reports, the big rig belonged to Jim-N-I Rentals Inc., a local safety equipment rental business.
Investigators ruled out drugs and alcohol as factors in the fatal collision. Those with additional information can call the Santa Rosa CHP Office at (707) 588-1400. Officers will release additional details once they become available.
