Bicyclist John Winston Abbey Dies in Hit-and-Run DUI Crash on E Grant Road in Tucson
Tucson, AZ (July 14, 2021) – Tuesday morning, a 56-year-old John Winston Abbey died in a hit-and-run DUI crash on E Grant Road.
Subsequently, police arrested the driver, a 24-year-old Nicolas Daniel Jesse Tope on charges of second-degree murder and for leaving the scene of a fatal collision.
The fatal crash in Tucson happened at around 5 a.m. on July 14.
Tucson Police said Tope struck the bicyclist in an area where three lanes merge into two on Grant Road. He then fled the scene after the collision, but they located him in the area of Grant and Columbus.
EMS responded and took Abbey to the hospital where he died from his injuries.
Meanwhile, an officer from the DUI Unit responded and evaluated the driver of the Kia. The officer determined he was impaired at the time of the collision.
Further, Tope is now booked into Pima County Jail.
