Bicyclist Injured in Hit-and-Run Crash on Highway 305 [Bainbridge Island, WA]

Bainbridge Island, WA (April 22, 2024) – A bicycle rider sustained injuries following a hit-and-run crash on Highway 305 Wednesday afternoon.

It was around 5:30 p.m. when the authorities received reports of reckless driving. Witnesses from Clearwater Casino reported a large truck that was swerving and alternately speeding up and slowing down.

When responding officers arrived at the scene, witnesses told them that the driver had struck a bicyclist and fled.

Immediately, the bicyclist was airlifted to Harborview Medical Hospital in Seattle.

BIPD ran the license plates provided by witnesses and confronted the driver in the North Town Woods neighborhood.

Officers found a Toyota Tundra in the driveway with the passenger side mirror torn off. Officers also said there were scuffs on the passenger side window. 

The man the officers spoke with confirmed was driving the truck.

“I could smell the odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his person,” Officer Nollan Quinn stated.

Officers said that the suspect changed his story multiple times during initial questioning. Later on, he admitted that he had driven on Highway 305, but denied stopping at the Clearwater Casino or hitting anything or anyone along the way.

Moreover, officers asked the man if he had alcohol intake that day. He said consumed a couple of beers, four Coors Lights, and two IPAs at the golf club. 

Officers also noticed a can of Zyn in the front seat of the vehicle.

“I asked him if he remembered if the mirror was damaged before leaving White Horse, and he stated no. I asked him if the mirror should be on the vehicle then, and he stated yes…He then stated he did not want to answer this,” Quinn added.

BIPD officers arrested the man for vehicular assault and hit-and-run.
