American River Parkway Crash Injures Bicyclist
Sacramento, CA (June 30, 2021) – On Tuesday, a bicyclist was injured in a DUI crash on American River Parkway.
Officers said the driver managed to get around the trail gates and onto the bicycle path.
Unfortunately, one cyclist is in critical condition.
Moreover, m of the cycling community are shocked crash like this could happen.
“I’ve ever heard about that on the trail, so that person must have been very drunk,” said Donovan Lewis, a cyclist.
Indeed, for local cyclists, an accident like this is their worst nightmare.
“You try to always think about those things, especially when you’re riding on the road. Obviously, you’re in that mindset but outside the road when you’re here you’re thinking you’re safe,” Lewis said.
Meanwhile, officers said the driver was showing signs of being drunk on the scene. Officers arrested the driver on Felony DUI and hit and run charges.
Also, we were told several other club members had to jump off the trail to avoid being struck by the vehicle.
Since you cannot read the intention of the driver in front of you, don’t tailgate. Maintain some distance between your vehicle and the one ahead in order to give yourself enough response time should the vehicle ahead make a sudden turn or stop.
Prevention Is Always Better Than Cure
While driving is essential for many in order to move about in their lives, it is one of the most dangerous activities performed daily. That is because auto accidents are a major public health threat. Traffic accidents are a leading cause of death for individuals ages 5-64.
Thus it is indeed crucial that everyone drives defensively in order to avoid traffic accidents as much as possible.
Here are some of the things that we can do to practice defensive driving:
Always drive at a controllable speed.
It is also important not to assume you know the other driver’s intention.
Be prepared to positively react to other drivers.
This one, we should never neglect. Yield at intersections, even if you have right of way.
Most importantly, stay focused on the road. Remove all distractions such as mobile phone use, unstrapped toddlers, etc.
