Bicyclist Struck and Killed by Amtrak Train on Grand Avenue and Washington Street
CARLSBAD, CA (September 30, 2019) — A bicyclist was fatally struck by an Amtrak on Washington Street on Thursday, September 26.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the collision happened at around 7:30 p.m. in the area of Grand Avenue and Washington Street.
The southbound train traveled at around 63 mph. Then the man rode his bicycle into the middle of the railroad tracks. The bicyclist then struck the side of the train.
Emergency personnel rushed the man to a hospital, where he later died.
Lt. Greg White of the Carlsbad Police Department said that the man was on his bicycle going to meet friends in Carlsbad Village when the crash happened.
The sheriff’s Railroad Enforcement Unit responded to investigate, with help from Carlsbad police.
