Cell phone use while driving poses a significant risk of death and injury on U.S. roads. 3,308 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes caused by distracted drivers in 2022.
Distracted driving is anything that takes your attention from driving. It includes talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment, or navigation system. It is anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.
In many jurisdictions, distracted driving is not only dangerous but also illegal. Laws have been implemented to penalize drivers who engage in activities such as using a cell phone while driving. These penalties can include fines, points on the driver’s license, and even license suspension in some cases. It is important to be aware of and abide by these laws to ensure the safety of yourself and others on the road.
It is impossible to drive safely unless you give your full attention to the task at hand. Any non-driving activity you do is a potential distraction and increases your risk of collision.
