Fatal Pedestrian Crash at Phelan Road and Beaver Avenue
PHELAN, CA (May 2, 2019) – A woman was killed after being struck by a car Thursday evening in Phelan, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The incident was reported at 8:47 p.m. in the area of Phelan Road and Beaver Avenue.
CHP and San Bernardino County Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and located a female pedestrian in the roadway with CPR already in progress.
Despite life-saving efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at 9:10 p.m. The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Bertha Magana-Rios, 37, of Phelan.
Magana-Rios had just gotten off at the bus stop and was using a flashlight and cane as she tried to walk across the street, when she was struck by a blue 2016 Toyota Scion iM. She died right in front of her family home.
She lived with Cerebral Palsy which made it difficult for her to run or scurry across the road, according to a family friend.
Bertha’s flashlight and cane were found on Phelan Road along with her other belongings.
The female driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
It is unknown if charges has been filed and liability has not yet been determined. The fatal crash is still under investigation by the Victorville CHP Office.
We would like to offer our sincere thoughts and sympathies to the family and friends of Bertha Magana-Rios during this heartbreaking moment.
