Petaluma DUI Crash Suspect Bernardo Perez Arrested
Petaluma, CA (September 11, 2020) – On Thursday, police arrested the 51-year-old Bernardo Perez in a DUI crash on Maria Drive.
The police said he crashed into the back fence of a Petaluma home. Also, he rammed his pickup truck head-on into an officer’s patrol car.
Petaluma Police Lt. Tim Lyons said the crash happened after 1 p.m. near Meadow Elementary School.
The city’s officers contacted Perez after receiving a report of a man whose car was swerving on the road Apparently, the same man stopped to urinate near Maria Drive and Rolling Hill Drive.
Perez drove off in his 2006 pickup when an authority on a motorcycle responding to the call knocked on his window.
Chasing a DUI Suspect
Moreover, two additional officers responded to the scene. They followed Perez south on Maria Drive past Sonoma Mountain Parkway. The suspect lost control of his truck and struck a fence.
The truck ended up facing the opposite direction after the crash. Perez accelerated as the two patrol cars approached him, striking one head-on.
The officer in the second car realized Perez still had his foot on the gas pedal. He used his car to hit the suspect’s truck and block his path.
“We just didn’t know what this guy was going to do,” Lyons said.
Furthermore, the authorities took Perez to a hospital for cuts on his face.
Lyons said, Perez was later cleared to be booked into the Sonoma County Jail for a felony DUI charge, as well as felony evading a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon, and violation of probation.
Also, an ambulance took the officer whose patrol car was hit by Perez’s pickup to a local hospital. The officer sustained moderate injuries.
The Sonoma County Jail inmate logs show Perez is due in court Monday.
Meanwhile, Perez’s arrest on Thursday was the fifth time he’s been arrested on suspicion of DUI since 2007, Lyons added.
In a word, practice safe driving habits on the road at all times… even when it is empty, even when there is no police officer around to make sure you make a full and complete stop.
