One Killed in Small Plane Crash in Chuckanut Mountain Area Near Fragrance Lake
BELLINGHAM, WA (February 12, 2018) – Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office reported a fatal plane crash on Monday night around 8 PM around the Chuckanut Mountain area near Fragrance Lake.
A 1979 fixed wing Mooney M20K was flying to Bellingham from Paine Field in Everett for maintenance, when it inexplicably crashed. Radio contact was lost and the location of the plane was unknown. The US Coast Guard and local first responders began investigating.
The crash scene was found by a US Customs and Border Protection chopper, and the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue deputies reach crash site to find no survivors. Only the pilot was inside of the small aircraft, and no other people were involved in the accident.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board investigators, the small plane crashed in a mountainous, tree-covered terrain, about 10 miles south of Bellingham International Airport.
