Deadly Rollover Crash on Highway 178 at Mouth of the Canyon
BAKERSFIELD, CA (January 20, 2019) – One person was killed following a car accident Sunday afternoon near the mouth of the Kern River Canyon.
The fatal crash happened around 1:04 p.m. on Highway 178.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a vehicle went over the side of the highway and down into the canyon.
The Kern County Fire Department was called to the scene and located the overturned car with one victim who appeared to have been ejected from the vehicle. That person was pronounced dead at the scene.
A secondary search was completed, with no other victims found. It worked with the Kern County Coroners Office to retrieve the body and bring it back up to the highway.
There were no other injuries, to civilians or rescue personnel, KCFD said.
The canyon road was closed until around 4:30 p.m., with only one lane open, alternating between east- and west-bound traffic.
An investigation is still ongoing to determine the cause of the crash and factors involved.
